Sea Spray Resort & Marina, located on Elbow Cay, in Abaco, Bahamas, recently announced a new fun-fish tournament scheduled for February 9-11, 2017. The Abaco Challenge will be a laid back, casual affair geared towards friends, families and folks who want to fish competitively during the day but then retire back to the resort and enjoy an evening of good fun.
FishTrack contributor Tony DiGiulian has signed on as the tournament director and will be working with Richard King, the new owner of Sea Spray Resort & Marina. This marina/resort has a long tradition of being a favorite spot for many fishing and boating families who travel to the Bahamas. The new owner has put a lot of thought, time and money into a huge renovation project and the property has never looked better. They have replaced bulkheads and docks, a new outdoor, undercover bar with seating for 100 is almost completed, the indoor bar/restaurant has been rebuilt and they are in the process of refurbishing the villas and maintaining the marina basin.
Sea Spray is also now an official IGFA Marina and in the coming weeks will instal a brand new weigh station, complete with an IWS electronic, IGFA-certified scale. The resort also boasts a new head chef. Chef Charles Edden takes great pride in his profession and has brought the food at the resort to a whole new level. From Lobster Eggs Benedict to some of the tastiest conch fritters in the Bahamas, Chef Edden is a master.
"Our goal is to host a series of tournaments and events geared toward everyday fishing families and friends," says DiGiulian. "The Sea Spray Abaco Challenge is our first event and we are planning something very special. Fantastic food, first-class entertainment and prizes, coupled with friendly competition, games and activities, promise to make this a must-fish event."
This tournament is not a billfish tournament. Eligible species will include wahoo, mahi-mahi, blackfin and yellowfin tuna and grouper. It will be a team event with each team weighing their two largest fish of each species per day. Grouper will be limited to one fish per day.
"We also have a Bahamian Champion category awarded to a team with at least two registered Bahamian citizens as anglers," says DiGiulian. "We have great sponsors on board and our prize packages will be top notch and will go to the top five places, plus largest of each species categories. The idea is to make it affordable and very enjoyable."
FishTrack and Buoyweather have signed on as the official weather and satellite imagery provider and will provide a weather report and sea surface temperature charts to help anglers find the fish. Winners of the event will also receive yearly subscriptions to their sites. All of the trophies will be provided by King Sailfish Mounts and are being custom designed for this event. In addition, the winning team will take home a set of four custom-made 30-pound stand up trolling rods, built by Fairbanks Customs valued at more than $2000. Additional prizes will be provided by Pelagic Gear, Moyes Big Game Tactical, Strike Point Tackle, Saltwater Brewery, Xtratuf Boots and many others.
